A Beginners Guide To Detangling

Welcome to the wonderful world of detangling. This is the part of wash day most people hate. I'm sure all naturalistas can relate to bad tangles and how it can take us AGES to detangle our curls carefully and not loose those all important inches. We share with you a few tips and tricks to help detangling on wash day a breeze.

There are two main points to remember when detangling.

  1. Never ever detangle while your hair is dry. We want to keep our length, not create breakage.
  2. Always make sure you work in smaller sections.

Detangling Tools

When it comes to hair tools, there are so many we can reach for to help keep those tangles at bay.

Your fingers
Wide tooth comb
Tangle Teezer
Denman brush
Felicia Leatherwood brush

Tools such as a wide tooth comb, Tangle Teezer, Denman brush and the Felicia Leatherwood brush are some of the popular choices when it comes to detangling. All have wide teeth to easily glide through your curls.
Using your fingers can be time consuming, but you have all the control when feeling those tangles or taking those knots apart. Your fingers are definitely on the cheaper side of a detangling aid, but is also a more gentle approach.
Remember, the last thing you want is for your hair to be dry while detangling, so products like water, your favourite moisturiser or some conditioner will help.

Products

Products can be used to help aid with the detangling process.

Water
Moisturiser
Conditioner

Using water, a moisturiser or conditioner are some of the main products. All these tools give moisture to the hair and slowly help loosen existing tangles and any tangles that want to appear, making the hair easier to work with. The thickness of your hair will depend on how much product you use.

The Detangling Process

  1. Firstly section your hair into however many sections you feel comfortable with. Whether it be 4, 6 or 8, having your hair in sections will help keep you organised and make sure your hair is throughly detangled with ease and not ripping any hair out.
  2. You want to make sure your hair is nice and damp, using your fingers to really work the water into your hair strands. The moisturiser or conditioner will help aid in smoothing out the tangles.
  3. Gently free any tangles with your fingers, pulling the hair apart.
  4. You can then use a detangling aid such as a wide tooth comb or Tangle Teezer. Starting from ends to roots, continue to gently comb through until your brush can pass through freely the entire hair shaft.
  5. Twist section to keep hair tangle free and repeat process on the next section.

Whichever your device, these tools are a great addition to your hair regime and help detangling on wash day a breeze.

What tools do you use to detangle your hair?

Naturally yours,

Team Flora & Curl

Nice Comb

It's a nice wide tooth comb. I have a couple other ones & I like this one the best. I only comb my hair when I wake up, before I refresh or wash it.

great and easy to use

I love that this clay is mixed with other things so you don’t have to apply any vinegar afterwards. It’s perfect for travelling, not only because ot is not a liquid, but also because ot is so easy to use and it hydrates and clarify your hair! <3 And the scent of this product is just AMAZING <3 My boyfriend loves to use it, too. He said his hair was never so beautiful before using this “magic”! :)

Curl gamechanger!

Just about to finish my first bottle of this and about to order another. I have fine curls and this foam is very lightweight, non sticky and has great hold too! You don’t need too much product to get bouncy full definition. It’s a staple in my curl routine!

Perfect curls

I stopped wearing my hair curly because I couldn’t find a product that would adequately hold my curls all day without making the curls look “wet” and over styled. A friend recommended this product and it has transformed my curls to look healthy and frizz-free!
