Meet Becky from the West Midlands in the UK! From being teased in school about her natural hair colour and texture, to loving her curls like never before, Becky shares her ongoing discovery of self-love and acceptance and we are here for it!
The Journey
What inspired you to return natural?
I’m Becky, I’m 25 years old and I’m from the West Midlands in the UK! I have always had a battle with my hair and at times, hated it.
I have previously bleached my hair and had to have it cut very short due to the damage. I had a lot of trouble at school due to name-calling etc and was very insecure about my hair. I had no idea how to care for it. My curly journey started when I wanted to start making my hair healthy after noticing that sulphates were lightening my hair. (I’m a natural redhead) I researched the effects of sulphates in the hair and I first started going plastic-free using natural shampoo bars etc. Then I started focusing on my curls.
I didn’t know my hair was curly until age 13. Even then, I continuously straightened and then curled my hair. In lockdown 2020 I started just letting my hair be natural and enhancing my curls after 10+ years of damage through straightening and curling. I still couldn’t wear my fringe natural for a while. It was a really tough journey of loving myself for who I am naturally and gaining the confidence to embrace it. I now wouldn’t change my hair for anything.
What were the challenges (if any) along the way of your healthy hair journey?
I have always had issues with my hair due to comments about the colour. I have previously bleached it just to get rid of the colour but as I’ve got older I’ve realised my hair is my identity and I now love it! I have always straightened my hair due to not knowing how to care for it and wanting to fit in with sleek non-frizzy curls.
What is your number 1 curl tip?
Not every curl is perfect! Perfection is not everything.
Discovering Flora & Curl
What made you buy Flora & Curl products? How did you hear about us?
I wanted a product that was glycerin-free (Sweet Hibiscus Curl Activating Lotion) when I was more aware of ingredients and their effect on my hair. The smell of the Flora & Curl products are amazing. My first curly cut my hairdresser used the Citrus Superfruit Radiance Shampoo and I could have eaten it! I also then bought the Citrus Superfruit Radiance Oil.
How did you see your hair change after using Flora & Curl products?
My curls were more bouncy after using something more lightweight. My hair isn’t as frizzy as it tends not to like glycerin. My hair smells lush too!
Which Flora & Curl product is your favourite and why?
One?! Okay, the Sweet Hibiscus Curl Activating Lotion. I love the smell and it was the first product that made me see a positive effect on my hair.
What is your current Flora & Curl haircare routine?
I used the Sweet Hibiscus Curl Activating Lotion and Sweet Hibiscus Curl Volumizing Foam to give me lift at my roots. I am still to try the scalp range and these are my next purchase.
What sets Flora & Curl apart from other brands/products on the market?
The floral smell. Also the drive behind the brand at once being a small business and encouraging a diverse range of people to love their hair.
