So, you’ve ruled out your scalp condition. Dandruff doesn’t seem to fit the bill, and neither does dry scalp. But have you heard of Psoriasis? Different from dandruff or dry scalp, Psoriasis is a condition that can have little to no symptoms which can be mild or more severe.
Not to fret, this World Psoriasis Day we’re going to be exploring the scalp condition to spread awareness with some helpful tips on how to soothe your scalp naturally.
What is Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a skin condition that can cause redness, itching, flaking and silvery scaly skin also known as plaques. These small or large patches can be found anywhere on the body but are more commonly found on your scalp, knees, elbow and back.
Did you know: Psoriasis affects around 2% of people in the UK, whereas in the US, it affects more than 3% of the population.

What Is The Cause
Although psoriasis is common, it is still not fully understood and still under researched. Our immune system is our bodies defence against infection and diseases, but having Psoriasis can attack the healthy skin cells and cause rapid growth within the skin cells, resulting in inflammation.
There are many common triggers that can affect a flare up. These can include:
- Environmental stresses, such as the weather
- General stress
- Medications
- Skin trauma
- Smoking and drinking
- Other conditions affecting the immune system.
How Psoriasis Can Affect The Scalp
Scalp Psoriasis is similar to another condition, called Seborrheic Dermatitis or a form of Eczema that can affect the scalp, face and chest. Although not to be confused with Dandruff which can have similar effects.
Our blog post Dry Scalp or Dandruff will help you determine the difference between the two.
In scalp Psoriasis these patches of irritation develop on the head, being underneath the hair. Patches may be small and develop in a few areas, or may cover your entire scalp. Often, scalp Psoriasis can spread to the hairline on your forehead, behind the ears or neck, and due to the plaques being underneath the hair, this prevents the skin from shedding and may become thick.
